Avocado (Persea americana)

Common Name: Avacado
Scientific Name: Persea Americana
Rating: Safe (fruit only)
Food Groups: Fats and Oils
Description: A dark green, pear shaped fruit with a large seed/pit in the center. Skin and leaves/bark have been found to be toxic to mammals, birds, and fish. No testing on Hermit Crabs to date.
Preparation/Storage: Choose a ripe fruit that feels soft under gentle pressure. Slice avocado in half, similar to the photo and scoop out the meat, generally trying to avoid the skin and the pit. Avocado can be served plain or mixed with other crab foods. Avocado can be frozen in ice cube trays for later use although it will take on a brown color across the top.
